What is it about music that affects us in such a visceral way? A song comes on the radio, and suddenly we’re smiling. Sometimes the person in the car with us is cringing and asking us to turn it down. Some songs make us cry (Everybody Hurts-REM), some make us cringe (Comfortably Numb-Pink Floyd) and others make us want to strut our stuff (Love Shack-B52s). Songs remind us of a time. Like a portal back to our youth, suddenly we’re at a disco skulling contraband rum in a coke can. Or in the back of Mum and Dad’s car listening to Billy Joel as we drove to the beach. All of these are the soundtrack to our lives. Some I could live without. MOTH(man of the house) loves the techno. The offspring? Well they love anything that used to be a ringtone. As for me, well I like anything I don’t have to quickly turn down when the kids are in the car. That’s the soundtrack of my life right now..less expletives. Once I made my parents play Prince’s “Lovesexy” album in the car. I reckon that’s 1hr and 45mins they’ll never get back.
Maybe that’s why we love the movies so much. A lifetime crammed into one sitting. Great looking life, awesome sounding soundtrack. You watch and you think, “yep, that’s the life for me!”
So I’ll leave you to ponder your soundtrack(and I’d love to hear about it), while I head off into my awesomeness, whistling “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by The Verve – my soundtrack for my life.
